A Father’s Day 300 mile XFINITY Series race at Chicagoland

Race Highlights:

  • Austin Dillon finished third in the Chicagoland 300 and was the highest finishing Richard Childress Racing driver. Brendan Gaughan finished fourth, Brian Scott eighth and Ty Dillon ninth.

Brian Scott Finishes Eighth at Chicagoland Speedway

 

After rain halted the NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway, Brian Scott and the No. 2 Jewel-Osco/Kraft Singles took the green flag for a Father’s Day edition of the Chicagoland 300 in the 13th position. The field came to pit road for the NASCAR mandated competition caution on lap 25. Scott reported early on that his Richard Childress Racing Camaro was tight handling and needed adjustments to help his front end turn through the center of the turns. Scott was racing inside the top 10 in the eighth position for the majority of the first 70 laps. Green-flag pit stops resulted in the RCR Chevrolet falling one lap down to the leader on lap 75, but when the caution flew on lap 79 Scott was in the Lucky Dog position and regained his lead-lap position running 12th. The team continued to battle tight-handling conditions and would end up making four additional stops on pit road for adjustments. Scott re-entered the top 10 with 40 laps to go and would stay there till the end of the race, crossing the finish line eighth. Scott earned his 10th top-10 finish of the 2015 season.

Ty Dillon Finishes Ninth at Chicagoland Speedway

 

Ty Dillon drove Richard Childress Racing’s No. 3 WESCO Chevrolet Camaro to a ninth-place finish Sunday afternoon, recording the team’s 10th top-10 finish of the season. The 300-mile race was originally slated for Saturday evening, but was postponed because of rain. Dillon qualified the No. 3 Chevrolet eighth, but on Sunday morning the No. 3 team made unapproved adjustments forcing Dillon to start from the rear of the field. By the first pit stop, Dillon was scored in the 15th position and drove inside the top 10 by lap 32. Despite having top 10 speed, Dillon radioed that the rear of his Chevrolet Camaro was "extremely loose," costing the team some extra track position. Crew chief Danny Stockman and team went to work on the balance of the car with a series of four-tire pit stops and adjustments. On lap 151, Dillon and 21 other competitors were penalized for pitting too early, which forced Dillon to restart 25th. The 23-year-old driver overcame the obstacle once again and drove back inside the top 10. Dillon crossed the finish line ninth, recording the team’s 10th top-10 finish of the season. He remains second in the NASCAR XFINITY Series points standings.

Austin Dillon Earns Top-Three Finish at Chicagoland Speedway

 

Inclement weather forced the running of the 200-lap NASCAR XFINITY Series event to Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. Austin Dillon led the field to the green flag in the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet Camaro after qualifying in the top spot on Saturday afternoon. After the green-flag waved, Dillon led the majority of the first segment of the race but reported he was fighting a loose-handling condition primarily on both ends of the mile-and-a-half race track. Crew chief Nick Harrison remedied the condition during the NASCAR-mandated competition caution on lap 25 with four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment. Dillon restarted in the point position at lap 31, but fell back a few spots still fighting a loose racecar. A number of caution flags were displayed throughout the middle portion of the race with Harrison calling the Rheem Chevy to pit road each time for a variety of adjustments including track bar, wedge and pulling spring rubbers. With 50 to go, the caution once again fell and, amidst a bit of confusion, Dillon came down for what would be his final pit stop of the day. Unfortunately the Rheem Chevy, along with 21 other racecars, was caught for pitting too early and was forced to start at the rear of the lead-lap cars. As the final laps ensued, Dillon raced his way in and around the top five ultimately crossing the line in third place. That finish bumped the No. 33 Rheem team up three spots to third in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Owners’ championship point standings.

Brendan Gaughan Caps Strong Run With Fourth-Place Finish at Chicagoland Speedway

 

Brendan Gaughan qualified the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet fifth for this weekend’s NASCAR XFINITY Series event at Chicagoland Speedway. Severe thunderstorms rolled through Joliet, Ill. Saturday evening, forcing NASCAR officials to postpone the green flag for the Chicagoland 300 until Sunday afternoon. Early in the race, Gaughan reported his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was too loose, making it difficult to handle on the slick racing surface. When the competition caution was displayed on lap 25, Gaughan brought the No. 62 Camaro to the attention of the Shane Wilson-led crew for fresh tires, fuel and multiple adjustments. After restarting 16th, the 39-year-old driver raced his way back inside the top 10. During a caution on lap 98, the team used pit strategy by taking only right-side tires, giving Gaughan the race lead for the ensuing restart. The South Point Hotel & Casino team raced inside the top five for the remainder of the day. Gaughan brought home a fourth-place finish, giving the team their second top-five and seventh top-10 finish of the season. Gaughan is eighth in the XFINITY Series driver point standings, only 11 points from seventh, as the series heads into an off weekend before returning to action at Daytona International Speedway on July 4.
